When she was working in Brownsville in the summer and always passed the empty lot. She found out the lot was owned by the city. This lot peaked her interest because the sun seemed to shine directly on it. There was something about it that just caught her eye. When she started to look into information about the lot she found out the school that was almost two blocks away. This is when she her idea for both the school and the lot.
Her plan for the lot had three main ideas: a new water system, plant beds, and fencing. These would lead to other ideas for sowing seeds, planting flowers, fruit trees, perennials, and even a chicken coup!
If the plan is followed then hopefully by May 2012 the lot will be open for teachers to have class in the garden. Older students can even become garden stewards, who will work on it in the summer and give out its fruits to the community.
Her main goal in this project is to bring food education into the school. She wants to help the community by providing the fresh produce. She believes that the health issues for students such as diabetes can be avoided by exposing them to a healthy food education. The importance of getting this education to kids earlier can help them become long time healthy eaters.
This article shows how one person can change the lives of so many. She not only want to help kids become healthy eaters, but also help the community as well. Finding the funds seems to be a struggle; in my opinion the best projects always do. If this lot does become made many lives will change for the better because of it,
